The picture that's worth 1000 beers

Or rather, a shot of me finsihing the London marathon - the reason I haven't been reviewing as much beer as usual.
While I did not drink during training, there were a couple of occassions where it was (socially) impossible not to! Besides, when the choice is water or beer, I think I should be allowed a pint.

A dry month

Permalink 03/26/12 14:50, by admin, Categories: Uncategorized
Thanks to my decision to run in the London marathon, I have been without alcohol for the last four weeks. One pilsner here and there, that's been my limit. And that's probably my limit for the next four weeks, too. Fortunately, my mettle hasn't been tested, since there's no planned beer events for me, currently. And I've managed to survive a friends leaving drinks. I guess this is the pain those giving up XYZ for lent, go through. Except that I've still got a month to go. And that beer tasting is part of my part, making it doubly hard.

An 8th Trappist beer?

I can't see they're yet been given the official stamp, but they're using the word Trappist, already! http://www.stift-engelszell.at/cmsimple/?Trappistenbier-Brauerei

Breweries and cheese - why?

Permalink 02/29/12 09:55, by admin, Categories: Uncategorized
Why is it that every (Belgian) brewery decides to make cheese? And why they go together like petrol stations and charcoal brickets? It's not like they have a similar process. Or ingredients. In fact, the only connection is that I like both, and am likely to buy both. Does anyone know if the move is anything but commercial?

Not so quick tastings - St Feuillien Brune

Permalink 02/23/12 17:19, by admin, Categories: Uncategorized

One of my TODOs on my last trip to Brussels (see http://www.bluedust.dontexist.com/fosdem2012/) was to quantify many of the traditional Belgian beers. Now, I've graded hundreds (probably thousands!) of beers in my time, but have never bothered with the standards. You know the sort of beers - the ones you can order, knowing they'll be good and enjoyable, but without the excitment that comes from a new discovery.

The first is St Feuillien Brune. 8.5% from Brasserie St-Feuillien.

Nicely ruby (no, really! hold it up to the light if you don't believe me!) with a stronger ruby on the tongue. (Think of this as a Brand Rouge-lite) matches the StF range well, as it is an all-round pleasant beer with a good tan head, and malty taste. Touches of liquorice and caramel give it a traditional Belgian sweetness.
